Haws FamilyThis is a featured page

I have 2 great-great grandfathers, William Wallace Haws and John Rowley, who moved their families to Mexico. William Haws had 2 wives and so in 1879 made the decision to leave Utah and go to Arizona. After moving multiple times in Arizona, William left in January 1885 and went to Mexico to find a place for his families. By September 1885 he had moved one of his families to Pacheco. He bought a ranch south of Pacheco in the Corrales Valley. The area of his property is still known. He worked hard to provide for his family, hauling lumber and working his ranch. William got sick in 1894, he suffered from the chills and fever all that summer. Then again during the winter while working on the Gelena project. He was able to return home to Pacheco. He died of pneumonia on March 6, 1895 and was buried in the cemetery at Colonia Pacheco. His wife Martha moved from the ranch in the Corrales Valley to Pacheco and continued to raise the children until the Exodus of 1912 when she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. His wife Barbara had continued to live in Arizona and had visited the families in Mexico on occasion.

John Rowley arrived in Mexico in November 1889 and went first to Diaz. It took him until September 1891 to move all four of his families from Utah, then Arizona, to Mexico. After working to establish a home at Diaz and then one at Dublan, he was then asked to help settle Pacheco. He took 2 of his wives to Pacheco, left 1 wife in Dublan and 1 wife in Diaz. He built each family a home, and built mills in both Diaz and Pacheco so that each family could be self sustaining. Early in the fall of 1893, John contracted pneumonia. He lingered in poor health until October. On 7 October 1893, John Rowley, pioneer builder, patriarch, and Saint, died. After John’s death, his wives remained in Mexico until the Mormon exodus of 1912. They carried on, raising their children and running the mills.

Both William Haws and John Rowley are buried in the cemetery at Pacheco and are two of the few there who have headstones. My brother and I went to Pacheco a few years ago and took pictures of the headstones and the cemetery. My great-grandfather, Charles James Haws, Sr is also buried at Pacheco. He has no headstone. Neither does the daughter who is buried near him. My grandfather, Charles James Haws, Jr was born and raised at Colonia Pacheco.

The Rowley family left with the 1912 Exodus and most didn't return. They settled in Arizona, Utah, and Idaho. My Grandfather's family left in 1912 and they were in Arizona for a while, but they went back to Pacheco by 1917 and stayed until about 1925. At that time they left Mexico and eventually settled in Utah. Some of the descendants of William Wallace Haws and Barbara Belinda Mills (1st wife) still live in Colonia Juarez today. As far as I know, none of the descendants of William Wallace Haws and Martha Barrett (2nd wife) live in Mexico.
