Upon returning from our successful filmmaking adventure in Zambia, Africa, Cyndi suggested a joint venture in film production in the U.S. I agreed to give this partnership one trial year to see if our collaboration would work. We found our combined efforts produced work better than if we worked alone. The “Mormon Colony Doc” is one of many projects.

As we have researched this topic, we have met so many people who have colonist ancestors or colony ties. They always want to share their stories, photos, journals or memories of their families Mexican experience. We have appreciated their willingness and desire to share their information. Every year someone publishes another volume with the story of the Colonies as the subject. This only validates our belief that people are interested in this event and want this story documented.

We also understand that we cannot represent everyone's story. So this WIKI is a way for individuals to share his or her story. We hope it will become a meeting place for old friends and families. We believe it will be a database for others to hear family stories from different perspectives and perhaps new or unknown stories. We request that everyone respect each other’s viewpoint. We also want everyone to understand that when you post a journal entry or experience or a photograph that it then becomes public domain for everyone to use. We hope that these stories will provide a history lesson that can remind generations of descendents of sacrifices made and memories created that can teach life lessons. We also believe sharing the written word is wonderful and enlightening and just plan FUN!

So please sign up. We have created a page for each of the colonies. We also created pages based on events. It is up to you to post your stories where you think they belong. We will monitor all entries. There may be occasions where we might feel your submission belongs on a different page and we reserve the right to move it. We also reserve the right to remove anything we feel belongs on a different site. Please keep in mind this is a site created to remember the first settlers of the Colonies. It is a site created to acknowledge what was attempted and accomplished without judgment, ridicule or contention. It is an information only site. Please respect that intention.

Also be aware that our DVD of the colonies is in production right now. Although we have many journal entries and photographs that we have chosen to tell the colony story, your story(ies) might do more justice to the project. If we feel that is the case we will make every effort to contact you and let you know we have chosen it for this project. We look forward to reading your entries.

I
had no idea that as a "non-member" I would become so involved in documenting the history of the Mormon Colonies in Mexico.

Through this process I have learned more about their history from their very beginning then most "members" ever thought about knowing. It has been very educational and enlightening. There have been times of heated discussion and moments where tolerance for differences of opinion occured. argueAt the end of every day we were able to leave as friends, respecting each others differences and still respecting each other.

I have spent most of my life as an educator. I love to teach. I have spent the last 20 years in Arizona teaching media arts. I love animation, film, and my students. In 2006 I took a 15 member crew to Africa to shoot the first dramatic feature film that was written by a Zambian, starred an all Zambian cast and was directed by a Zambian. producerThat experience changed my life. I found that what I love more then teaching is writing and producing movies. I also found another person with the same commitment to film as I have. We are anxiously engaged in completing this project by the end of the summer. We have already finished our first screen play, and have begun two others. There is just not enough time in the day for all we want to do!

In creating this site, our intention is to provide a forum for more voices. We want everyone to be heard. And we want a place where people can listen. We hope you will utilize this site to document your stories and those of your parents and grandparents.
